Benoit Marie, Weapon, at David Roberts Art Foundation, London

«Weapon is the first solo exhibition in a London institution by French artist Benoit Marie (born 1978). Arising from his interest in philosophy and conceptual art, but nonetheless immensely formal, his work reveals him as an artist who has inherited as much from surrealism and minimalism as from Marcel Broodthaers and Joseph Beuys. This aspect of his practice is the focus, of the current exhibition, curated by DRAF’s director Vincent Honoré, with assistant curator Nicoletta Lambertucci»

Charlie Woolley, Postscript (Ps. I love you), installation view at Almanac, London

«In his practice, Charlie Woolley (London 1981) departs from a close personal connection to London’s East End and the history of class struggle in order to explore the aesthetics of protest and the representation of social uprisings. Using a variety of media the artist creates palimpsests of society, exposing frictions between the symbolic languages of underground counterculture and capitalist consumerism»

Verne Dawson, Apalachicola to Zirconia, at Victoria Miro, London

« The paintings and works on paper in Apalachicola to Zirconia, are reflections on the geographic region and route taken by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto on his second and fata expedition through the American Southeast, ostensibly searching for a fountain of youth. Time collapses as past, present and future are represented in oil paintings that obey a non-linear chronology; they stand simultaneously as a visualising of the past and as a perception of the present from an imagined future, where the natural and man-made retain a more balanced co-existence»

Civic Virtue at W139, Amsterdam

«As a collective, CIVIC VIRTUE formed in 2010 around a shared interest in social communities, their organizational structures, and their symbols of power and virtue. Its core members Geirthrudur Finnbogadottir Hjorvar, Ruchama Noorda, Gijsbert Wouter Wahl, and Brian McKenna, draw upon the continually re-emerging symbolism and allegories of specific historicopolitical moments for rumination and recuperation of the call to virtue in contemporary society»
